  • Adjacent segments overlap at least 2 inches.
  • The metal extends at least 1/4 inch below the roof sheathing.
  • It extends at least 2 inches back onto the roof deck.
  • It is mechanically fastened no more than 12 inches on center.

Note that last one. Fastened means nailed, not glued and not friction-fit. A crew that runs drip edge and tacks it every three feet has installed something that meets the description but not the standard, and it will oil-can and pull loose within a few seasons.

What If My Current Roof Does Not Have It

Very likely it does not, and that is normal rather than alarming. Older roofs predate the requirement and are grandfathered, meaning nobody can force you to retrofit a roof you are not touching.

The Underlayment Rule That Flips

This one catches inexperienced crews constantly. The correct layering is opposite at the two edges:

  • At the eave: drip edge goes on the bare deck first, and the underlayment goes over the top of it.
  • At the rake: the underlayment goes down first, and the drip edge goes over the top of it.

The logic is that water always has to end up on top of the metal and outside the building. At the eave, water traveling on top of the underlayment needs to be delivered onto the drip edge and out. At the rake, water running sideways off the underlayment needs the metal on top to catch it. Reverse either one and you have installed a channel that routes water into the fascia, which is worse than having no drip edge at all. Where the two meet at a corner, the rake piece laps over the eave piece by at least a couple of inches.

Drip Edge Versus Gutter Apron at the Eave

Standard drip edge has a short lower flange that terminates outside the gutter and throws water clear. That works when everything is aligned. In heavy rain, or where a gutter has pulled slightly away from the fascia, water can overshoot or run behind the short flange and end up on the fascia instead of in the trough.

A gutter apron is the wider variant, with an extended lower flange of roughly three to four inches that reaches past the back of the gutter and drops water directly into the trough.
